1. Publisher's Note:
Complying with the CAN-SP*M Act -- A 10-Point Checklist for Marketers
Jeanne S. Jennings, January 8 2004

January 1, 2004 marked the beginning of a new year -- and of a new era for e-mail marketers. For the first time ever we have federal regulations to comply with. While there weren't any surprises in the Act, there are things that even the strictest opt-in e-mail marketers will need to do. Here's a 10-point checklist for compliance along with a timeline for future provisions, a link to the full text of the legislation and more.

3. How CAN-SP*M May Affect Permission Email Marketers & Publishers
Anne Holland, MarketingSherpa, December 23 2003

Along with some specifics, the Act serves up some gray areas for marketers -- unknowns that will be fleshed out as the FTC writes the regulations to back up this legislation. The best piece I’ve read on existing gray areas was published by Anne Holland, the founder of Marketing Sherpa. Anne’s area of expertise is online publishing, so most of her concerns center on that arena. But it’s valuable reading no matter what type of e-mail you’re sending. Check it out!

4. Lost in the Cyber-Kudzu Matthew Heller, The Los Angeles Times, December 21 2003
You may need to register to read this article

An interesting article about what appears to be a 'gray area' e-mail marketer -- very timely in light of the new federal regulations. Read this and make up your own mind, not only about this particular organization but about the future of e-mail marketing. Full disclosure: I spoke with the author and am quoted in the article.

5. Interactive's New Year Zachary Rodgers, Internet Advertising Report, January 5 2004

I was drawn in by the first section on e-mail by Hans-Peter Brondmo, but I kept reading to get an overview of what to expect with regard to rich media, wireless and other emerging marketing technologies. Take a moment and get a quick forecast of what to look for in 2004.

Closing
Thanks for reading! As always, your thoughts and feedback are welcome.

Best,
Jeanne
