| August 26 2003 Dear Reader, I'm dedicating this issue to RSS, which stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication, depending on who you talk to. What is it? Some are calling it the future of e-mail marketing and publishing -- the answer to filters. If you aren't up to speed, take a few minutes now to learn what it's all about -- and see if it's for you. Also, if you're in the DC Metropolitan area, please join us for a New Media Society event on September 9th. We'll be talking blogs (another hot e-mail topic these days) and yours truly is one of the panelists (please come up and say 'Hi' -- I love talking with readers!) -- more details in the 'sponsor' section which follows the table of contents. Table of Contents 1. Publisher's Note: Thoughts on RSS, Blogs and Other 'Hot New Technologies' Jeanne S. Jennings 2. Can RSS Save the Day? Email Tidbits 3. RSS Resource Lockergnome 4. Syndicating Your Web Site's Content with RSS 4GuysFromRolla.com Content 1. Publisher's Note: Thoughts on RSS, Blogs and Other 'Hot New Technologies,' Jeanne S. Jennings, August 26 2003 I'm looking into RSS for a few of my consulting clients -- as well as considering it as another format for this e-mail newsletter. Here are my initial impressions, questions and thoughts, as someone who's been on the 'bleeding edge' of technology before. 2. Can RSS Save the Day? Steve Outing, Email Tidbits, August 8 2003 Brief story of one publisher who is moving to RSS. 3. RSS Resource Chris Pirillo, Lockergnome By far the most complete overview of RSS I found -- Chris, who wrote the first book on online publishing, does a great job of laying out the benefits of RSS. A must read -- and bookmark -- if you're thinking about moving toward RSS. 4. RSS Newsletter Announcement Barbara Feldman, Surfnetkids.com, August 15 2003 By far the best announcement I've seen to date on moving to RSS -- not only does Barbara explain the shift, she provides her readers all the tools they need to get started. Use this as a starting point to understand more about RSS and take it out for a test drive yourself. Includes links to the major players offering RSS software -- many of whom offer free trials. 5. 5 Key Questions (You've Been Dying) To Ask About Business Blogs Debbie Weil, Marketing Profs, July 8 2003 Debbie's article focuses primarily on business blogs, but she tosses in a paragraph about RSS, as it can be used to distribute blogs. Her article discusses the topic in very easy to understand terms -- great for non-techies and a good reference point if you're considering RSS. 6. ReadMe 1st: RSS Technology Attracts Online Publishers, Marketers Jonathan Angel, Technology Marketing, June 1 2003 Another great article, and one which includes RSS as a marketing, as well as a publishing, tool. Also talks about the origins of RSS -- which was invented more than three years ago by Netscape. Good quick read. 7. Making an RSS Feed Danny Sullivan, SearchEngineWatch.com, April 2 2003 This is like a graduate level course in developing an RSS feed -- very detailed and well written. But then, Danny's stuff always is. If you're thinking about doing this, read this article (or just forward the link to your technical folks!). 8. Syndicating Your Web Site's Content with RSS Scott Mitchell, 4GuysFromRolla.com, February 1 2003 Another even more technical description of how to create your own RSS feed. Additional links to more information as well. Closing Thanks for reading! Have a great Labor Day weekend! We'll publish again on Thursday, September 11. Go Skins!
